CLINIC DAY!

Stitches are done by JiJi in the clinic....

We often see over 60 babies on MCH (Maternal Child Health) Day.  Immunizations include DPT,  Hep B, Hib, Rotavirus, Pnuemonia, MMR, Polio.

The Pharmacy.....Soko and Namrata count, prepare and handout medicines....

1 out of 3 Fijian adults have diabetes.....clinic is out of Metformin!

A few FACTS:  In Fiji, 40% of all people live below the poverty line, 10% of all deliveries are teenage pregnancies, the maternal mortality rate is 40/100,000.  In the Pacific, one in four girls is a mother before the age of 19.  Women continue to be disempowered and do not have disposable income, the majority do not own property or have a bank account.  There is gender based violence with 85-90% being violence against women.  The contraceptive uptake rate is low at 30%.  One in 4 contract a STI.  Abortion is illegal here but we see the results of many unsafe abortions.  World wide one woman dies every minute of every day from pregnancy or the complications of pregnancy.  Most women in Fiji do  deliver in a hospital but they come late for prenatal care.
"There is a direct connection between a woman's ability to plan her family, space her pregnancies and give birth safely and her ability to get an education, work outside the home, support hr family and participate fully in the life of her community."
I believe women here are starving for education re: their reproductive health.   No one talks about it.
