La Aurora

Today Joe and I visited the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic, where we saw how men and women prepare cigars.  We saw firsthand the different types of tobacco and aging process.  Deveining is the removal of the veins in preparing the tobacco.  There is a 3 step process to creating the cigar....bunch, bind and roll.  From the roller the cigar undergoes aging before being packaged for retailers.  The origin of La Aurora dates back to 1903 where Don Eduardo Leon Jimenes founded the cigar factory.  Many of the world's top cigar brands are made in and around Santiago. It is critical when buying cigars to test whether they/ve been made well and stored properly.  Pick up the cigar, it should have a springy tightness, indicating solid construction.  If it is too soft or too hard, it won't draw well.  It should not crackle under your fingers either; that means it is too dry, and will smoke like kindling!
